Though they seemed busy, they were able to seat me and my friend right away on their patio. My friend raved about their huevos rancheros so I, of course ordered the huevos rancheros deluxe. It comes with two eggs, hash browns, beans, chile and cheese and served on corn tortillas. One bite and I immediately understood why my friend wouldn't let me leave ABQ without eating at Barelas. Although it was very tasty, I simply couldn't finish it all, but I sure did try.

The Barelas Coffee House is a staple of Albuquerque's Best Mexican food that can be had. It's priced easy on the pocketbook and besides being so far away, the only downside is trying to find parking. The place has grown so much over the years that it takes up the entire small triangular block on which it sits. If you're on a budget you should really try this place as you'll get food comparable to other places with 3 times the price. Like usual, you know if the locals all eat there that it must be good. Say Hey to "Fro" as we used to call him, Michael Gonzales is the owner and operator.

Memorylook is an ideal cafe to work from with indoor and outdoor seating, but gets incredibly busy, so plan accordingly. This longtime cafe now has three locations throughout Southern California. Whether visiting 10 Speed in Santa Monica or Sawtelle, the coffee is strong and well made, while the space is a solid place to hang out for the day, especially the cozy Calabasas location. Named after the country’s endangered silverback gorillas, this local roaster and cafe serves as a way for founder Jack Karuletwa to give back to his homeland. He’s also partnered with the Rwandan government to improve the quality of care and growth of the native endangered gorilla. Over in Leimert Park, Harun Coffee is serving a first-class collection of smoothies, cold brews, and teas.

Owned by husband and wife duo, Rachel and Ron Sazon, the two started Undergrind Cafe in the summer of 2018 after a successful round of crowdfunding, in an effort to craft a greater sense of community in the area. Barelas may not follow Fabiola’s recipe to the letter, but in spirit it’s certainly an exemplar of the magnificent meat dish Fabiola introduced to the world. Having followed Fabiola’s recipe, my adovada adoring Kim is a stickler for authenticity and quality. As such it was high praise indeed when she declared the carne adovada (served with eggs and hash browns) at Barelas “even better than Mary & Tito’s” her long-time favorite. I’m not willing to make such a heretical declaration, but certainly agree Barelas’ carne adovada is in rarefied air, among the very best in New Mexico. Today, if you want to take the pulse of the city, you go to Barelas Coffee House where Albuquerque’s movers and shakers congregate for a great meal.
